This sounds like wacky fun

July 10, 2009

On Saturday, Beverly Hills hosts a "public art party" to celebrate the work of Yayoi Kusama.  I’ve experienced a Kusama installation before at the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh.  It was cool and wacky.  This event’s free and the Paley Center for Media will be free as well that day as part of the festivities.

Combine this day with a visit to the Renegade Craft Fair (also free) and you’ll have a great, creative Saturday.

How to look at art without feeling inferior

February 3, 2009

What a great title!   LACMA is hosting a free lecture on looking at art.  Here’s its blurb:

"Milton Esterow, editor and publisher of ARTnews, talks about the international art scene, the art market, art journalism, art criticism, and changes in taste and fashion, followed by questions from the audience. Born in New York City, Esterow was a reporter for the New York Times and specialized in cultural affairs. He has lectured extensively both in the United States and abroad and is the author of The Art Stealers. Since he bought ARTnews from Newsweek Magazine in 1972, Esterow has guided its growth into the most widely circulated art magazine in the world. Under his direction, ARTnews has won most of the major journalism awards presented to magazines; ARTnews editors and reporters have been honored thirty-two times for excellence in reporting, criticism, and design."

Whale Fiesta

January 4, 2009

January 25th is the Whale Fiesta at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium.  Look at the nifty whale sand sculptures on the beach.  Also admission to the aquarium is free that day.  I predict lots of youngsters will be at the event as this looks extremely family friendly.  Their website write-up is funny:

"Join us for tons of fun as we celebrate the migration of the Pacific Gray Whale past our shores and the start of the Whalewatch season at the annual Whale Fiesta on Sunday, January 25, 2009 from 10 am to 4:30 pm. Co-sponsored by CMA and the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Cetacean Society, it’s a family day filled with activities and exhibits for all. We’ll have our famous Duct Tape Whale Sculpture Contest, games, arts and crafts, puppet shows for children of all ages, talks by whale experts, food and gift vendors, marine awareness organizations and music! This year we are building a life-sized rare Cuvier’s beaked whale out of sand on our beach. Grab your shovels and come lend a hand! Admission is free and a 25-cent park and ride shuttle is available at 22nd and Miner Streets (at the end of Harbor Blvd.). For more information, please call Larry Fukuhara at (310) 548-7562 x223."

Human Google Day, Part I

December 24, 2008

UnHip LA roamed around the South Bay, vowing not to use Google as a resource.  We decided to use our eyes and ears and become human Googles instead.  Look what we found:

By following good ol’ street signs, we wound up at the South Coast Botanic Garden, which is "one of the first gardens to be developed over a sanitary landfill."  That doesn’t sound too appealing, but the gardens were nice.  The day was drizzly and a tad gloomy, so the ticket taker let us in for free!  Normally it’s $7 for adults; $5 for students and seniors; $2.50 for children 5 - 12 years old; and free for kids 4 and under.  I enjoyed the small lake, pretending I was in a bayou.

If you become a member of this garden, starting at $25 for seniors, you get free admission to 15 other botanical gardens in Socal, such as Descanso Gardens, the L.A. County Arboretum in Arcadia, and a slew of UC gardens.  Unfortunately, the Huntington Gardens is not part of this hit parade.

In addition, the program at Los Encinos will feature two 19th Century style bands (Los Californios and the Band of the California Battalion), Victorian dancing, a blacksmith, a telegraph office, children’s games, tours of the restored 1849 adobe and participants in authentic Victorian costume.

Museums Free-For-All

More recession fun -

On October 4 and 5th, many museums in Los Angeles County will be open for freesies.  Typically a museum free day means way more crowds, but still it’s a fun way to hit a bunch of museums at once.  Here’s the list from www.MuseumsLA.org:

Get tipsy and pet sharks

I just found out about this funny-sounding event:  the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach has free shark petting every Friday night from 6 pm - 9 pm, with light refreshments and alcoholic beverages available for purchase.  Sounds like it could be a dangerous combo. I called and asked if a lot of people show up and the aquarium said no. The Shark Lagoon is the only area open for free; the rest of the aquarium is closed.  Still, I think this is a great sounding happy hour.  Drink, pet, and then go out on the town.  Long Beach is a fun town.

From the Aquarium’s website  www.aquariumofthepacific.org:

Aquarium Event

Shark Lagoon Nights

The public is invited to get up close with the ocean’s ultimate predators at the Aquarium of the Pacific for FREE during Shark Lagoon Nights. Guests will have the opportunity to touch bamboo sharks and see large sharks such as sandtigers as well as rays in the Aquarium’s Shark Lagoon.

Coffee, hot cocoa, beer, wine, desserts, and snacks are available for purchase.

No way….art galleries in Alhambra

September 2, 2008

I know there are a few art galleries in Alhambra, but I just wind of a few more.  Could Alhambra be becoming the next hip artist spot?  Will gentrification rear its ugly ahead in the SGV?  Honestly, I think Alhambra is big enough that it could take it and still retain its ethnic charms.  From  http://www.yolandagonzalez.com/homepages/events.html

I found out about this via an enewsletter I get from the artist Carol Es whose work I dig.

**** UPDATE *****

I moseyed on down to this and it was a great show.  I was impressed by the art at both galleries and the abundance of food and drink.  The vibe was very laid-back, cool, but in an SGV-way, not pretentious.  People were nicely, artistically dressed.  I’d say the age range was late 30something and up with a majority being Latino.  Not too many young hipsters milling about.  The galleries are in an industrial park of sorts, alongside clothing and computer manufacturers, and a Mexican restaurant.  I was really surprised that Alhambra had this semblance of an artistic community and was really happy to not have to drive past downtown to get a dose of art.  You could say it was Bergamot Station-light, very light, with two galleries within walking distance of each other.  A jazz band entertained at Howeeduzzit while patrons sat on the grass and enjoyed them.  The weather was beautiful.  Yay Alhambra!

I heart the Goodwill / Govinda’s

July 22, 2008

I read somewhere that one way to be environmentally conscious is to buy recycled clothes, as in thrift store shopping. Could me boycotting The Gap really make that much of a difference?  For the past week, I have been looking for inexpensive, thin, 100% cotton, long sleeved shirts for traveling to India.  I scoured many stores and came up with nothing reasonably priced.  Then it dawned on me to try the Goodwill.  Score, score, score.  Thrift stores are perfect for buying clothes that are out of season, as long sleeve shirts seem to be right now.

I was amazed at the really good selection at this Wesssside Goodwill:
8905 Venice Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90034
(310) 845-9327

The fashionable cast-offs here were aplenty.  Seriously!  The Wessside’s good for something.

Right down the street from here is Govinda’s, a Hare Krishna restaurant, store, museum, and temple.  I actually stopped here first to try to find shirts but didn’t find anything I liked (the shop is nice and worth a visit).  The LATimes has written about Govinda’s food many times, and I would have given it a try, but I wasn’t hungry.  The vegetarian buffet did not look that extensive though.  It’s $7 all you can eat or $4.15 a pound.  On Sundays at 6 pm, they offer a free six course feast, according to their website.  It was very peaceful there.

And while you’re over there thrift shopping and eating Indian food, might as well stop by the Musuem of Jurassic Technology which is also nearby.  It’s probably L.A.’s most unique, imaginative museum consisting of fictitious displays.  It’s a great and freaky.  So there you have it, UnHip LA does the Wessside: Govinda’s, The Goodwill, and The Museum of Jurassic Technology. You might even forget where you are.

Inside a wedding cake

June 16, 2008

I visited the renovated, stunning Huntington residence at the Huntington Library and Gardens the other day.  Click here to see this amazing property. The interior has a creamy palette and it felt like I was inside a really elaborate and delicious wedding cake.  I’ve never seen a mansion this large before.  Here’s a little description from its website:

The Historic Residence Reopens May 28, 2008 After Extensive Renovation

Once the home of Henry E. Huntington (1850–1927) and his wife, Arabella (1850–1924), the Huntington Art Gallery opened in 1928 displaying one of the greatest collections of 18th-century British art in the country, including the celebrated Blue Boy by Thomas Gainsborough and View on the Stour near Dedham by John Constable, as well as a valuable collection of French decorative arts.

After a $20 million renovation, the gallery offers visitors an enhanced experience with one of the finest collections of European art in the nation as well as a more accurate sense of the lifestyle of one of the most prominent millionaires of the early 20th century. In addition to a thoroughly updated infrastructure, the refurbished mansion includes 5,300 additional square feet of public space, new interpretive components, and new gallery presentations of approximately 1,200 objects of European art from the 15th to the early 20th century. The renovation also brings to light original architectural features that previously had been obscured.

Woops!  I put the wrong Levitt Pasadena Link here.  It doesn’t look like the Levitt is doing Shakespeare this year.  What a shame.  When I hear otherwise, I’ll post it.  Sorry!  *** UPDATE ***  The LATimes has a listing of Shakespeare productions this summer.  There are free performances in Culver City, Downtown, and Long Beach, and in Orange/San Diego Counties.  Woopie!  Click here.  Also, the LATimes has an article about Summer Shakespeare in L.A.  If you’re overwhelmed by all the freebie Shakespeare offerings, I recommend just checking out the Independent Shakespeare Co. at Barnsdall.

Museums of the Arroyo FREE DAY!

May 16, 2008

This Sunday…..this sounds great!

http://www.museumsofthearroyo.com/

If you’re going let me know.

******UPDATE*******

We went to this - loads of fun despite the 100 degree weather.  I sweated my way through the Heritage Square Museum and the Southwest Museum and then got respite at the air conditioned Police Historical Museum.  All three stops were vastly different and taking the yellow school bus between them was great fun.  It totally brought back memories of school field trips and elementary school.  Back then we could fit three to a seat, now it’s two.

So yah, the Heritage Museum which is a collection of Victorian-era houses to traipse through was really interesting. The Southwest was beautiful but most of the collections were closed.  My favorite though was the Police Historical Museum.  What a setup, a well-designed space with jail cells to try out, displays of handcuffs and deadbolts, and a seat to take mug shots.  There was also a rather morbid display of the North Hollywood shootout, the shot up cars and tanks used, the bullet-proof clothing the assailants wore, and much more.  It was freaky.  L.A.’s finest also offerred free hotdogs and lemonade.  A secure feeling of macho men prevailed.

I’m so glad I got to try out these three off-beat museums without paying!

I’m becoming a member!

April 22, 2008

I visited the Chinese Garden at the Huntington Library and Gardens this weekend.  OMG, it is so heavenly - a huge lake with bridges, a cafe, ducks, pavillions, outdoor seating, poetry, art….  It really is grand and a great escape. Taking a few walking laps around the Chinese Garden will be my new exercise routine.  Forget LAFitness, go to the Huntington!

Membership is $100 for the year and includes lots of specials such as night time strolls around the Huntington (they usually close at 4:30 pm) and invitations to art openings. Also with a membership, I can stroll around the gardens at my leisure instead of feeling rushed to cover the grounds in a few hours because I can just come back the next day.

I will be posting pictures soon.  Come back and see the leaf-shaped windows, really purdy!  When I get my membership, I can take one person with me for freesies.  The Chinese Garden is my new favorite place in the SGV.  The Crowell Public Library in San Marino is also really great (it’s a library that looks like a resort spa).  Both places have a huge list of Asian donors.  My hairdresser told me that the Ritz Cartlon was bought by some Chinese investors, paying $150 million in cash (a good journalist would fact check all this, but right now I am short on time).  Anyhow, these three significant Chinese moves really show the large, wealthy Chinese presence in the upper SGV.

UPDATE:
Beautiful pictures from the Gardens press office:   http://www.huntington.org/Information/ChineseGardenPressKit.htm

I went back to the Chinese Garden today 4-26-08.  The day was murderously hot and miserable.  The gardens were beautiful but the weather and crowds just made me very cross. The pond water looked murky. I did have fun winding around the Japanese Garden’s narrow little paths and walking through the bamboo forests. I want to visit the gardens when no one else is there, but that would involve me becoming a higher priced member - they get to enter at 8 am.  I cannot wait till the members’ only evening strolls this summer.  Yes, unhipla has become an elitist.  I want my Members’ Only jacket.  I just find the Huntington Library and Gardens so peaceful; it’s like a little retreat.  If only it wasn’t the SGV summer of hell heat.  I shall try again next weekend.  My goal is to know every inch of that place and find the neat nooks and crannies.

Can you believe it’s $20 to go in on the weekend and $15 on the weekdays?  That’s nuts!

The Day After, The Rose Parade Aftermath

January 10, 2008

One of these things doesn’t belong:

Reading is Power:

It’s the Year of the Rat!:

The day was INSANELY crowded.  Like all the websites suggest, go as early as possible.  We went around 3pm to look at the floats and look at this madness!  I was fighting for my life in the crowds.

Will I ever do this again?  Probably not, but it was good to check this off my Angeleno checklist.  $7 admission.  Free neighborhood parking is possible, but is a long wait fighting through traffic to get it.  Don’t drive up Sierra Madre, take a side street.  There are shuttles that take people from various spots in Pasadena for $3 round trip.  It might be worth it.  Shuttle people also get to bypass the ticket line.  Good luck if you go next year.  The floats are on display right after the parade and the next day.

Car For One?

December 2, 2007

The BMW Isetta, on display at Alhambra’s New Century BMW dealership.

Also known as the rolling egg, yogurt pot, and coffin on wheels (see the Wiki).

I’ve often thought while lumbering down an L.A. freeway that I should have a car for one.  Here I am in a 5-seat sedan with tank-like walls and I am all by my lonesome - one person going to the drugstore, one person making a run to the beach, one person….  Okay, this isn’t a single’s ad.  Nevertheless, feeling like I am wasting space and gas, I would wish for a car for one.  Well, after visiting Alhambra’s BMW dealership, I ain’t making that wish anymore.  I climbed into this little one-seater (or two), the BMW Isetta, and thought this was an instant death wish.  The single door is in the front and it closes in on you like a roller coaster safety bar.  The little car is clausterphobic and cramped.  I’m a relatively small person 5’4” and I felt trapped.  Yes, it’s the cutest little thing ever, but nope, you won’t see me in this little rolling egg.  I’ll stick with my airbags and tank.

Turns out that the Petersen Automotive Museum is currently running an exhibition on microcars that will be ending February 3, 2008.

Friday Fun

November 1, 2007

On Friday, November 2, Caltech will have their first annual Olive Harvest Festival when the whole campus will be picked clean of its olives.  Then the olives will be pressed and sold as olive oil for a campus fundraiser.  The day will be full of olive picking, demonstrations, and food tastings.  Sounds very weird and interesting - this is part of Caltech’s efforts to be a green campus.  You can be part of the festivities by clicking here.  Volunteer pickers are needed and ladder safety training is on Thursday.

*** UPDATE:   Here are some photos of the olive harvesting from Tableau Vivante.  It looked like fun; I wish I could have made it.  ***

Then in the evening, head over to the Norton Simon where the first Friday of the month is free admission from 6 pm - 9 pm.  What a nice way to wind down the work week - with ancient scupltures from India and a great art collection.  The Norton Simon has a very surprising collection and the space is truly beautiful.    www.nortonsimon.org

Download a printable PDF version of the LA Archives Bazaar Poster (3.6MB). For more information, please contact lasubj@usc.edu.

Free programs include:  "Researching in your Jammies" and "What to do with your collection if your kids don’t want it."

Free admission, parking, and lunch!  To visit the gardens though, you have to pay the $15 admission fee (for adults); it is open 10:30 am - 4:30 pm.

*** UPDATE ***

I paid a visit to the bazaar, and my, was it hopping!  Tons of librarian-types wandering around and collecting information.  I learned that the Filipino American Library does bus tours of Historic Filipino Town and that there is a Los Angeles sports museum and archive set up after the 84 Olympic Games in L.A.  Interesting.  Pics from the day:

Something for you lovebirds out there…

September 20, 2007

This Friday, the Audubon Center at Debs Park is leading a free bird walk at 7pm and then showing two bird documentaries at 8pm: Eyewitness: Bird (English with Spanish subtitles, 30 min) and Ocean Oasis (Spanish with English subtitles, 60 mins).  This sounds like a lovely date idea!  The film will be shown outside in the center’s courtyard, free admission and refreshments too.  On the walk, you might see an owl and other night birds.  I suspect a lot of families and kids will be there.  The next bird walk and film showing is October 5.  Bring a sketchbook and a flashlight.
