A Change of Heart: Fresh and Easy

April 26, 2009

I’ve become a fan of the store.  I know I pooh-poohed it in other posts, but now I have become a fan of the artisan sourdough wheat bread (it toasts quite well) and the super-fast checkouts.  I have never stood in line there.  I just walk right on up to one of the atm-like check out stands and voila, I’m out.  I think it helps if you don’t have a lot of items, which is usually my case.  I tried one of the soups (as per a reader’s suggestion) and it was good too, and I finally got a bag of lettuce that did not go bad in a day.  I will say the store definitely is "easy" and the bread tasted very "fresh."

It’s chicken and ice cream week!

From J, I learned this:

Monday, April 27 - Free grilled chicken at KFC.  Grilled, not fried.  KFC’s branching out.

Tuesday, April 28 - Free chicken at El Pollo Loco till 8 pm.

Wednesday, April 29 - .31 cent scoop night at Baskin Robbins from 5 - 10 pm (firefighter fundraiser)

Yeha!  Recession dining continues…

Eat for Pennies

April 7, 2009

Hop Li in Arcadia is currently running a $1.38 dim sum promotion (Monday through Friday) celebrating its 4th anniversary. Hop Li is one of my favorite dim sum places because there’s usually no line.  I hate waiting in line for dim sum.  Sure, you might think the no line is a bad sign but it’s not.  Hop Li is in Arcadia, far enough away from the Monterery Park, San Gabriel, and Alhambra dim sum scene that it doesn’t attract big numbers.  Plus the restaurant is large and nice looking.

Twohey’s in Alhambra has a month-long $.66 special celebrating their 66 years in business.

April 9 - 15 = .66 floats

April 18 - 22 = .66 mini-sundaes

April 23 - 30 = .66 Stink-O-Sliders  (I believe these are little burgers.)

Eat for pennies!  Hooray for anniversaries!

This looks tasty!

April 1, 2009

Indian sandwiches or naanwiches!  I’ll have to stop by this place next time I’m in the Miracle Mile.  I read about this on EatingLA.com.  I tried to do a direct link to her post about the Cowboys & Turbans restaurant but I couldn’t figure out how to do it.  Cowboys and Turbans serves Indian street food.

Limp Lettuce Found Again at Fresh & Easy

March 29, 2009

I got the Greek salad from Fresh and Easy and it was very disappointing - just some hacked up leaves thrown haphazardly in a container. (Trader Joe’s has much better salad presentation.) The leaves did not remain fresh for longer than a day despite the freshness date on the package.  Is this because Fresh and Easy does not use preservatives, artificial flavorings and colorings?  Has anyone else received limp, brown lettuce from this place?  This is the second time I’ve brought home salad from them and saw it turn brown within a day.

Anyhow and regardless of my disappointment with F&E, I still find myself drawn to the place and buying chocolate chip granola bars from them.

BBQ for $5 at Whole Foods

March 18, 2009

Can a cheap meal be had at Whole Foods?  As I get to know its second floor eating area better, I think I can say….Yes.  The breakfasts, tacos, and Middle Eastern food all seemed reasonably priced.  Then I saw this on WF’s (Arroyo Parkway location) calendar:

Saturday March 21st and Sunday 22nd

Whole Lotta BBQ!

12pm-3pm $5 per plate

Join us at the Demo Station both days to get your loaded down plate of BBQ, chips/cookies, salad, and drink for only $5! And all the proceeds go to the Whole Planet Foundation. Help end poverty and end your hunger all at the same time!

____

Get your plate "loaded" with BBQ for only $5?  This I have to see and maybe I will see it twice.

Yesterday, I had WF’s Korean spicy chicken bowl and I was pleased with it; the spinach and brown rice with it were great.  It’s not that cheap though at a little over $8, but it was good and the health factor makes me like it more than other Korean fare.  It’s what I would call Healthy Korean Cuisine.

Whole Foods affordable in a recession?  It just may be possible. Plus they have free Wifi.

Fresh & Easy Visit #3

February 16, 2009

So I’ve now been to Fresh & Easy in Alhambra three times and can say this - I don’t like the shopping experience there.  The aisles are smaller than most grocery stores, so it’s hard not to run into someone.  I felt cramped and cornered there.  Also the ready-made food section looked very uninspired.  I could not bring myself to buy anything from there.  I do, however, like the tea section; it seemed to have more unique teas than most stores and A LOT cheaper at $2.15/box.  Whole Foods did not have chocolate tea, but Fresh & Easy did. (I just saw that Trader Joe’s sells tea cheaper than Fresh and Easy.)  I did get some Fresh & Easy chocolate granola bars that were hearty and tasty. I did not look forward to checking myself out though.  As I was bagging my groceries, another family started scanning their purchases, so their stuff collided with mine.  Grrrr!  After shopping at F & E, I have decided I like the little luxury of having a clerk and bag person.  F & E makes Ralphs seem like a spa.  I did see a lot of families shopping at F & E, so I’m guessing there are good deals on meat and produce.  I’m really more of a ready-made, frozen, and snack shopper, so perhaps my views of F & E are not the norm.  Also, I think the rainy weather has made me more cross than usual.  Grrrr!

Burrito Kingdom, Alhambra

I’ve been meaning to blog about Burrito Kingdom in Alhambra, CA, the place where I go for my carnitas taco fix.  I’ve been to this place many, many times, and I am in love with their carnitas taco, which is juicy and spicy (with salsa) and always tasty.  I have not tried many other things on this menu mainly because I have been so pleased with the carnitas taco.  Why stray from a good thing?  This is the best carnitas taco I’ve had in L.A.!  At $1.50 each, the price is recession right with each taco having much more meat than most taco truck fare.  The freshly chopped onion is great too.

Tops in Alhambra also has good tacos but just not as flavorful as Burrito Kingdom’s.

Not a bad deal

February 11, 2009

At Whole Foods on Arroyo Parkway, you can get a 2 taco plate with rice and beans for $5.29 (or thereabouts) at the 2nd floor restaurant.  That’s a pretty good deal for Whole Foods.  The plate was good too, not exactly savory, but good in a healthy, filling way.  I suppose if you slather it with hot salsa it could be even better.  I had the carnitas and chicken taco plate.  The chicken was better than the carnitas.

Also while I was at Whole Foods, I stocked up on my new favorite wunder-cookie - Erin Baker’s organic breakfast cookie mini’s.  I will blog about them later!

Fresh & Easy visit

February 9, 2009

I visited the new Fresh & Easy in Alhambra on Sunday.  It was hopping!  I think Fresh & Easy has hit pay dirt with this location, which is across the way from Target, and in an area that needed a grocery store.  The store is large and has more product variety than I thought it would, especially in bath products.  I guess I was expecting a much smaller, more boutique-y store.  This is more like a nice-looking 99-cent store.  Some items seemed really cheap (cookies); others did not (frozen Indian food).  I bought a bag of salad which quickly wilted.  The pink Princess cupcakes were disappointing.  I was impressed by the tea selection and got a tasty chocolate-flavored black tea box for $2.15.  The store is from England, so I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised by the tea selection.  I am not sure if I will be a Fresh & Easy regular though as I was not too impressed with the ready-made food selection.  It was not that cheap!  I also had some difficulty at the self-checkout, paying for my bananas twice.  A clerk had to delete one purchase.  It was kinda annoying.  I think the reason I was so not thrilled by Fresh & Easy is I have been to grocery stores in London and was thinking this would be modern and cool like those.  I will give Fresh & Easy another chance though.  Be forewarned - at Fresh & Easy you check yourself out and bag your own groceries.  I could see this being a problem with people who are not familiar with computers, such as my mother.

Fresh & Easy in Alhambra

January 2, 2009

The Fresh & Easy website says that the Alhambra location of this budget grocery chain will open January 14th.  I’m curious about this British-owned market, which seems to be a cross of Trader Joes and Aldi markets.  Supposedly Fresh & Easy has fresh foods at low prices and a happening ready-made aisle.  We shall see!  I did stop very quickly at a Fresh & Easy in Escondido around 10 pm when the prices on sandwiches and salads were being reduced to a dollar.  I will reserve judgment on the sandwiches until I try more of Fresh & Easy’s goods.  A website criticizing Fresh & Easy says it is owned by the "Wal-mart of Britain."  In these tough times, I don’t think those words are a deterrent.

14 days of fun

December 14, 2008

Much media attention lately has been focused on budget ways to have fun and get by.  Take at look at this LA Times series of well-known designers, such as Philippe Starck, shopping at Big Lots and coming up with great looks:

Starck and the other designers emphasize finding simple and basic items and steering clear of the tacky.  I’m impressed by Starck’s place setting for $5.50 each. He also walked away with underwear, towels, and children’s art supplies.

If you’re jonesing to dine out, I Google-stumbled upon this site, Entertainment.com, which offers a free 14-day membership that contains coupons galore for restaurants, stores, movies, and more.  In particular, I enjoyed their long list of Indian restaurants; Mezbaan, a new favorite Indian restaurant of mine in Old Pasadena, offers a buy one, get one free entree coupon.  Also, there are movie tickets for $6 (plus handling)!   The catch?  As soon as you sign up (with only your email address), the coupons are only good for 14 days, and you’ll most likely get spammed with advertisements.  So be sure to check off the box saying you don’t want ads and/or use an email account that you don’t care about.  Entertainment.com publishes those big coupon books that students sell as fundraisers and are in bookstores.  I have one and have been getting pretty good mileage out of it.  This is how I discovered Mezbaan, their delicious food, and $8 lunch buffet.

So if you’re budget entertaining or dining out, you still have options!

I just hope things don’t get so bad for you that you’re eating on $1 a day.

Salad Spotted - $7.99

November 2, 2008

It’s been a while since I’ve posted in the Salad Spotting category.  I just found about this great-sounding deal at Whole Foods - $7.99 for a make your own salad.  Normally the Whole Foods salad bar can run your bill if you’re not careful with how many heavy tomatoes you throw in, but it looks like the store is dropping the ounce restriction on their salads.  I’ll have to investigate.  But for now here’s the verbage from Whole Foods:

Discovery of the Day - Mussels for $5.40

September 7, 2008

I stumbled upon a $5.40 super treat while in K-town today.  At Han Kook market when you enter, the restaurant to the right has delicious mussels in a white creamy sauce sprinkled with orange fish eggs and chives (excuse my non-foodie language, I really don’t know the names for these things).  It’s similar to a dish that’s frequently found in Japanese restaurants.  I enjoy dislodging the mussel and slurping/chewing it.  Anyhow, I was really surprised to find this dish in a Korean grocery store restaurant.  It was quite tasty and a great deal. Seven or so mussels (in shells) with a miso soup for just $5.40.  I only ate four of the mussles and I was full.  I had also ordered a $4.50 tasty smoothie (strawberry, banana, kiwi) at the froyo/pizza shop on the left side of the plaza.  And I had a great swedish chair massage at Kim’s Chun Ki, which is a Korean department store of sorts and is further down Olympic Boulevard.  The yelpers here rave about Kim’s.

I heart the Goodwill / Govinda’s

July 22, 2008

I read somewhere that one way to be environmentally conscious is to buy recycled clothes, as in thrift store shopping. Could me boycotting The Gap really make that much of a difference?  For the past week, I have been looking for inexpensive, thin, 100% cotton, long sleeved shirts for traveling to India.  I scoured many stores and came up with nothing reasonably priced.  Then it dawned on me to try the Goodwill.  Score, score, score.  Thrift stores are perfect for buying clothes that are out of season, as long sleeve shirts seem to be right now.

I was amazed at the really good selection at this Wesssside Goodwill:
8905 Venice Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90034
(310) 845-9327

The fashionable cast-offs here were aplenty.  Seriously!  The Wessside’s good for something.

Right down the street from here is Govinda’s, a Hare Krishna restaurant, store, museum, and temple.  I actually stopped here first to try to find shirts but didn’t find anything I liked (the shop is nice and worth a visit).  The LATimes has written about Govinda’s food many times, and I would have given it a try, but I wasn’t hungry.  The vegetarian buffet did not look that extensive though.  It’s $7 all you can eat or $4.15 a pound.  On Sundays at 6 pm, they offer a free six course feast, according to their website.  It was very peaceful there.

And while you’re over there thrift shopping and eating Indian food, might as well stop by the Musuem of Jurassic Technology which is also nearby.  It’s probably L.A.’s most unique, imaginative museum consisting of fictitious displays.  It’s a great and freaky.  So there you have it, UnHip LA does the Wessside: Govinda’s, The Goodwill, and The Museum of Jurassic Technology. You might even forget where you are.

Boba’s up a $1

July 15, 2008

Oh dear, the recession has really hit close to home now.  I used to be able to get a pretty good milk tea for a $1 from a hole-in-the-wall restaurant called Wan Tai something in the 7-11 plaza on Las Tunas at Mission in San Gabriel.  But today my boba was $2!  Was I getting the recession price or the girl who doesn’t speak Mandarin price?

I showed the waitress the $1 price on the menu but she muttered that was no longer good.  Also, their delicious, home-style lunch specials have inched up in cost.  Boooo.

The recession hits Starbucks

You know times are bad when Starbucks starts closing down - 600 shops have been given the boot and 12,000 jobs will be lost, according to LA Observed.  Now I am not a big Starbux fan at all, but my sister is - big time, so this post is in honor of her. To soften the blow, Starbux will be introducing new Pinkberry-esque drinks:

"Along with the lost jobs and store closures is the introduction of something called the Sorbetto. It’s a Pinkberry-inspired drinkable yogurt that comes in three flavors - Tangy, Citrus Ice and Tangy Citrus Ice - and is being pushed as a mid-afternoon snack (keep in mind that foot-traffic slows by the afternoon). The Sorbetto makes its debut today at 313 stores in Orange and Los Angeles counties. The company is also rolling out a protein-and-banana smoothie called the Vivanno."

Also Starbux is now offering FREE wifi to those who join their rewards program.  It’s a free program but you have to pay for drinks with money you put on their card.  There are more perks  too such as free drink modifiers, refills, and beverages.

So if the economy has got you down, you can still have that Starbucks treat but just milk it for all its worth.  I wonder if they’ll be bothered if I just scoot in there to use their wifi, escape the heat, and drink water out of one of their nice clear cups.  Starbucks has never been stingy about giving out water, I’ll give them that.

Here’s an LATimes article on the new drinks.

*** UPDATE ***

I’ve tried the Vivanno - the banana chocolate flavor - and I love it!  I’ve also tried the Sorbetto and think I liked it.  It’s a kind of an odd drink - a Pinkberry-slushie of sorts.  I think the Sorbetto has more dairy in it than the Vivanno.  The Vivanno is very filling.  I wonder if it could be considered a meal replacement - if it’s healthy enough for that.  There’s been a lot of blogosphere ruckus about how bad the Vivanno is and that it pales in comparison with a Jamba Juice.  Personally, I love the Vivanno because it’s not as ovewhelming as a Jamba Juice drink and not as sweet.  I’ve never been a fan of JJ.

Please sir, can I have some more, sir?

UPDATE - We went to this.  There was hardly anything to nosh on and no staff hawking things (okay, there was one girl handing out chocolates). Where’s the Arroyo pride?  So then we ate at the disappointing hot food and salad bar ($7.99/lb).  I did see a tiny fish restaurant on the first floor that I’ll have to try later.  I wonder how Whole Foods is making out during the recession.

Back in L.A. / UCLA Medical Center

July 4, 2008

The San Gabriel Valley is so uncomfortably hot and muggy now.  I was in Westwood the other day and the weather was beautiful, a cool breeze all over the town.  It’s so unfair that the Wesssside has such lovely temps.

I took a walk through the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, which opened on June 30, 2008, after a 10-year building process and a $829.3 million budget.  Wow!  What an ultra-modern beautiful space designed by I.M. Pei.  When I stepped into the main hallway, I was overwhelmed by the spaciousness and white color scheme. I thought I was on a ship in Star Wars and looked for Storm Troopers.  It was that white.  If you’re in Westwood, I suggest you stop by and see this stunning design which encompasses over 1 million square feet and can withstand up to an 8.3 earthquake.  It was utterly beautiful right down to the doors of the bathroom which blended into the walls.  The meditation room was also a nice spot, with blankets in a basket.

And if you get hungry, eat there.  Hospital cafeterias usually have reasonable prices; $6.60 for a meal including side dishes and drink.  This cafe, with a resort-like patio, is up the outside stairs and connected to the Ronald Reagan hospital.  There is also a dingy restaurant on the circular driveway of the hospital.  Skip that place; the prices were high and the food seemed like greasy hamburger stand fare.  Is it wrong to eat at a hospital if you don’t really have a reason to be there?  I admit to feeling a little guilty.

Take the photo tour on the website.  The hospital really felt monumental and took healing to the next level.  Way to go UCLA!  I wonder if my piddly HMO insurance would get accepted there.  Probablly not!

LATimes coverage of opening day.  This article says that the 520 new patient rooms are all singles and have daybeds for overnight visitors; bow-tied waiters bring meals; children have Wiis, plenty of play space, electric cars to scoot around in, a ceiling painted like a constellation; and there are separate entrances for the different patients - children get a less initimidating entrance and don’t have to enter with adults.

The Taste of Chicago Begins!

June 27, 2008

The world’s largest food festival is in Chicago and it begins today, June 27, and goes till July 6.

www.tasteofchicago.us

Chicago-style pizza pie.  Yummy!

*** UPDATE ***
We went to this today.  It was very crowded but the weather was just perfect, cool and a little humid. The weather here in Chicago is still such a relief to me coming from the scorching temperatures of L.A.  I now embrace humidity like a long lost friend.  Okay, so back to the Taste.  The food I had was tasty but it’s really not worth bucking the crowds for it.  I can’t even remember the names of the places I ate at.  For shame.  What surprisingly was fun was the $4 ferris wheel ride with great views of Chicago.  After eating, we headed to Millennium Park which was super fun.  I wish I could have stayed longer there but my nephew had turned into a big ball of whining mess so we had to leave.  Chicagoans are so lucky to have Millennium Park with its outdoor Gehry-designed concert hall, Great Lawn, huge silver bean statue called "Cloud Gate", and the Crown Fountain which is not your typical fountain.  (There’s way more in this public park too, with an excellent free calendar of events.). Millennium Park runs circles around any public art space / park us meager Angelenos have.  If I could get the virus off my SD card, I would load my pictures.  I want a sliver bean statue in L.A.!

(Photo source: Flickr)  Silver bean, where have you bean all my life?

(Photo source)  This is the Crown Fountain.  It’s two 50 foot, glass block towers that have rotating images of Chicagoan faces within them.  Water cascades off the towers like a waterfall and the images also spit water at the crowds, like fish or gargoyles in a fountain would.  It’s a major splash fest and in the middle of the two fountains, there is a huge puddle of water to play in.  It’s a water fountain without borders.  Some kids were prepared already in their bathing suits.

For great pictures of the park, please click here.  This blogger has wonderful pictures!

Two Whole Foods in Pas - 2x the fun!

January 3, 2008

January is hopping for Whole Foods, both at the new Arroyo Park location and the old one on Foothill.  This month’s free events include teen make-up workshops (a very smart marketing move to lure in youth), a singles mixer at the wine bar on Jan. 10th (I’d like to see that because the space is pretty tight), sake tasting for $5 on Jan. 18th, goji berry juice chug-a-thons and more. All the events I listed are at the Arroyo Park listing.  The Foothills location has good events too, including free tours on Tuesdays at 11am and 5pm about shopping on a budget at Whole Foods.  Participants get a free green bag.  I’m fond of Whole Foods; they have lured me in completely now with their new lifestyle location.  When I get my shoes at Whole Foods, I’ll let you know.

Aaaah! Bun-N-Burger in Alhambra

December 28, 2007

Pasadena on Lake Avenue was a madhouse today, a Friday afternoon.  People and crowds everywhere; it was worse than a weekend.  I couldn’t find a place to sit at two establishments, so I headed to Alhambra, Pasadena’s dirty little sister, and the Bun-N-Burger on Main Street.  Aaaah,  bliss.  An almost empty restaurant.  Sure, not good for the business, but great for me.  I was surprised that the broccoli, bacon, and cheese omelet was as tasty as it was ($6.50).  Love the deer on the wall.

At this old-timey burger joint, the menu is evenly divided into three sections: burgers, sandwiches (French dip, BLT, etc.) and Mexican dishes. Menudo is served on Saturdays and Sundays, and tamales can be purchased by the dozen.

The rice and beans were great; the carnitas tacos not as flavorful as I would like, but still a satisfying meal ($6.25 plate).  Cookies are $.50.

Whole Foods Fantasy

December 10, 2007

I finally visited the new Pasadena mega Whole Foods and spent a few hours breaking it in.  It’s gargantuan and reminded me of department stores in London where dining in-store is common.  The space has really high walls and gives the whole experience an airy, grand feel, but overall, it’s probably overkill.  The groceries are split over two levels so if you’re thinking about a quick trip in here to grab a few things, forget about it.  You’ll have to park in the structure, ride up the elevator, get a cart, shop, take the escalator up to the second floor to shop more, put your cart on an escalator too, meet your cart….you get the picture.  If you’re in a hurry, the other whole foods on Foothills in Pasadena is probably a better option.

I did like the new Whole Foods though; it was fun to sit in the cafe area and people watch.  The second floor dining options are many, plus there is a tapas and wine bar.  The massage room is just a room, no big deal, and the chocolate fountain that has been raved about on manyblogs did not impress me.  It did not look like a fountain, more like a chocolate plunger.  I think I am just bitter because Whole Foods would not let me take any pictures.  The security guard saw what I was up to and asked me not to take any shots.  So harumph!  I guess enough bloggers captured the space anyways.  So here’s my offering to the blogosphere:  Whole Food’s women’s bathroom.

[PICTURES DELETED]
It has a woodsy, eco-friendly color scheme, which is not coming across well in this pic, and an interesting needle disposal box.  What the?  Is Whole Foods expecting diabetics, drug users, or people with medical conditions (probably the latter and this is the reason they shop at WF)?   Very interesting and thoughtful.  I’ve never seen such a thing in a public bathroom.  Kudos to them.

Pa Pa Walk Confessions

December 3, 2007

My friend Shmoo says she has this psycho-killer ability to be able to judge a restaurant by its facade.  She’s keen like that.  So when we went to Pa Pa Walk on Valley in the SGV, I anxiously awaited her judgement.  She gave it a once-over and deemed it worthy.  We sat in the bright orange-colored room and were not disappointed.  Two smoked duck plates (we both agreed there is no better way to eat duck, it’s gotta be smoked; the dish is succulent), a wonton soup, and spinach dish later, we ambled out of the pleasant shop.  The wait stuff was quite kind and friendly too.  I didn’t feel ignored and hurried like I usually do when dining in Asian places.  The staff seemed to have kind eyes.  Shmoo who can be endearingly East-coast abrasive in restaurants was melted to an Oliver Twist-like child when asking for things.  “Excuse me, would you have any chili sauce for us,” instead of “Get me some hot sauce and some bowls. Pronto!  Growl!”

Shmoo, who is far more Foodie than I, declared this to be the best Chinese meal she’s had in L.A.   We wanted to get hungry again, so we could go back for dessert - shaved ice mountains.  We would have walked off of our food but it was raining, so we waited in my car in the parking garage, our feet hanging out the windows.  Yes, it was totally juvenile and we even waxed about our high school days - Shmoo "artfully dodged the maximum allowable classes" while I tried to, but didn’t have too many places to hide (boarding school).  We just needed some cheap alcohol and other aides, and it would have been like ditching class.  We stared out the sunroof at the garage ceiling.  It was a great moment.  There is something about sitting and talking in a parked car that seems to bring out the philosophical and angst in people.  It’s like taxi-cab confessions.  It’s like talking in the intimate space of a bed together, but not really. At 11 pm, we rolled out of the car, and got up to Pa Pa Walk just in time to see the kind-eyed staff leave.  They closed at 10 pm.  So no shaved ice for us, but still a great night.

Pa Pa Walk is a Taiwanese street food restaurant in the Hilton Hotel shopping plaza.  On this cold rainy night, it was the only packed restaurant in the plaza.  Hands-down, the place has the simplest decor, but probably is the happiest place there.  The plain walls seem to say: “this place is just about the food.”  You eat without distractions, but the orange-ness gives it all a good glow.

I went back the next day (without Shmoo because she lives too far away) and had the shrimp omelette, sausage fried rice, and fishball and meatball soup, all delicious.  The place has a missing ingredient I don’t see in a lot of Asian restaurants - an unhurried harmony.

And might I suggest afterwards go and get a foot massage at either the Tibetan place or Vivid Spa upstairs.

*** UPDATE ***

I’ve had the duck plate several times now since my original post.  Sadly, it’s never been as good as the first time that rainy night.  Maybe because Shmoo and I had to work so hard to get there, braving the rain and all.  Also Shmoo came from pretty far away.   I actually just had the duck again today and got a stomach ache from it.  Life is cruel this way.

But other dishes I have eaten there such as the spinach noodles and coffin bread soup were delicious, especially the soup. The strawberry shaved ice dish was okay, overly sweet, but still fun to eat for two.

Great soup in a tasty, crunchy bread box.  I’m sure this is high in carbs and calories.

In Grocery Store News

November 20, 2007

I swear I am not a Foodie but it appears that I blog a lot about food.  This is all because I hang out at BiggestMenu.com.  The site and the friendships I have made there have massively educated my taste buds - I am now a betel leaf addict (Thanks WCX).

So I’m excited to visit two new grocery stores in the SGV:  Whole Foods on Arroyo Parkway in Pasadena, and Fresh & Easy on Foothill Boulevard in Arcadia.  The Whole Foods is a new 77,000 square foot operation that I read has a huge in-store dining area and a quiet room for massages. I’ve always enjoyed eating at Whole Food’s hot food bar, so yay for all this.  Their calendar has some fun (and free) food tastings coming up.

Fresh & Easy is a grocery store concept from the U.K. in which fresh, ready-made foods are available at low prices.  Since I am not much of a cook, I often cruise the ready-made aisles of grocery stores.  This store supposedly is full of ready-mades so I’m excited!  I remember shops like this when I visited London many years ago - I’d just pop in grab a good sandwich and go.  I wished that such things existed here and now they do.  Grabbing a fresh sandwich is much nicer than getting tuna fish in a triangle, something which I’ve done way too many desperate times. Fresh & Easy also appears to have a good corporate culture and offers health benefits to part-timers, how nice.

Herbal Teas and TCM

November 9, 2007

Lately after eating bird spit, I have developed an interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine, also known as TCM.  I found out that there is an exhibit on TCM going till Feb. 8 at the Center for Healthy Communities in downtown L.A.  How exciting!  Here are some shots of a great herbal tea brew I drank on a street corner in Hong Kong.  I am not sure what all the herbs were but the pictures show the ingredients. Do you know what these things are?  The tea was warm and sweet and medicinal but in a good way.  I really felt good after drinking it.  My next stop will be to take these pics to a herbal medicine store in Monterey Park and say, please recreate this brew for me.

I like how this looks like abstract art.
