I ate bird spit today

October 9, 2007

or bird’s nest as it is called.  I went with Wandering Chopsticks to a Chinese herbal gourmet lunch press event today at the San Gabriel Hilton, co-presented by Wing Hop Fung herbal retailers and Eu Yan Sang products. The bird’s nest is made out of bird regurgitation and somehow this nest of spit came to be known to help skin rejuvenate.  Apparently this is how all the Asian movie stars have such great skin; they’re eating bird spit. I’ll post pictures of the two nests that I ate.  Thanks WC for introducing me to so many new foods.  First head cheese, now bird spit.

The menu:

The nests:

Pureed Partridge with Bird’s Nest

Sweet Bird’s Nest in Hawaiian Papaya

The texture is gelatinous with a few firm bits in it.  Both dishes were tasty but I admit to having a hard time chewing on the nests because of knowing what they were.  For a play-by-play of the entire meal, check out Wandering Chopstick’s blog.
