Hit Me with Your Best Shot

July 7, 2007

Oh my goodness, the city of Alhambra will be rocking out this summer with bands from the 70s and 80s. How did little Alhambra lure out the following line-up?:

- Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo (July 7);
- Kool and the Gang (July 14);
- John Kay & Steppenwolf, Chuck Negron (formerly of Three Dog Night),
and Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals (July 21);
- Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (July 28);
- Teena Marie (August 4); and
- K. C. and the Sunshine Band (August 11).
And it’s all free, with food vendors, arts and crafts booths, kids activities…

Saturdays, 6 to 10 p.m., Second Street between Main St. & Commonwealth
(Free  Admission to Event)

Outdoor Silent Movie at Heritage Square

I got wind of this through LA City Nerd’s blog:

Heritage Square’s Silent Movie Nights
Saturday, July 7 and 21, 2007.  Beginning each night at 7 p.m.
Experience a summer night at Heritage Square Museum while watching your favorite old movies and cartoons. On Saturday. July 7, we present a showing of the celebrated “Our Gang” troop in Pigskin Palooka, a classic film released 70 years ago this year. The screening will take place on the lawn near the Palms Depot and on hand for this special screening are members from the original and supporting cast. (Movie at July 21 screening to be determined.)

The "Our Gang" Reunion and Silent Movie Night screening admission prices are free for museum members and $10.00 for the general public. Heritage Square Museum will open at 7 p.m. for picnics with the show starting at dusk. Guests are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket to sit on, picnic, and warm clothing.

I used to drive by Heritage Square when my commute took me on the 110 North, and I always wondered about this place.  It looks so weird to be where it is.  It’s a bunch of houses from California from 1850 to 1950, and a museum.  Here is a pic from www.you-are-here.com.

The screening is another picnicking opportunity!

Summer Shakespeare - Barnsdall Art Park

My goal this summer is to hit every outdoor Shakespeare production in the So. Cal area.  I am going to start with Barnsdall Art Park; they have a really great-sounding line-up performed by the Independent Shakespeare Co.A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Richard II, and Macbeth.  Tonight (Saturday) is A Midsummer Night’s Dream at 7:30 pm.  I have never been before to this festival, so I am not sure what the parking situation will be like.  The performance is free, too (donations appreciated)!  Nothing like free Bard, to make a good, unhip summer; performances run through the beginning of September.  The photo above of the park is from you-are-here.com, which has great photography of Los Angeles landmarks, shot by a German engineer who visits L.A. often.  Check it out!  Also, if you didn’t know, the Barnsdall Art Park has a museum, art center, and the Hollyhock House (above) which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

"Some seating is available, or bring a blanket and stretch out on the lawn.
Please dress warmly, and reservations are recommended."
