Indian Ice Cream Heaven in Artesia

July 30, 2007

I had four courses of delicious ice cream at the Saffron Spot in Little India (Artesia) with Abby’s Pleasure Palate group. This was ice cream with depth and silky, rich textures, made with saffron, basil, rose, pistachios, pomegranate, chikoo…  Really, I could not get enough. This was the best ice cream I have ever tasted, none of that artificial Breyer’s or Baskin Robbins or even Ben and Jerry’s (!) nonsense. Saffron Spot puts Pinkberry to shame.

Ice cream…

Kulfi Falooda…

Kulfi…

Shaved Ice…

Now what exactly are all these things?  I’m going to have to link you to Abby’s blog and this article to get a better sense of the cream.  Sorry, I’m not a foodie and don’t follow ingredients.  I just hunt and gather.  Speaking of which:

To find the place, look for the newish-looking Little India Village shopping plaza on Pioneer Boulevard, just off South Street.  The plaza has a curved exterior with two small elephant statues in the front and a free parking lot.

Saffron Spot is the perfect after-Bollywood-movie treat!

Joan Jett in Alhambra

July 29, 2007

ALHAMBRA JUBILEE -  Saturday, July 29, 2007

Who knew Alhambra puts on such a big show?  It was quite the mob scene for Joan Jett, stadium seating and all at the Alhambra Jubilee.  I saw security and cops quickly move in on two potential brawls, leading people out in handfcuffs.  Joan Jett gave a sweet, punk, pop performance. She’s 49 but sings with the idealism of someone much younger.  With a new album out now called "Sinner," Joan Jett lead the crowd in sing-a-longs that would do a pre-school teacher proud.

TIP: If you go next week for KC and the Sunshine Band, get there early for seats.  Joan Jett started at 8:30 pm and the stadium seating was closed by then.

Dance Baby Dance

July 28, 2007

Caught the 11pm screening of Jhoom Barabar Jhoom (Dance Baby Dance) at the Naz 8 in Lakewood / Artesia.  The movie, of course, stars my favorite actor Abhishek Bachchan, who does a great job.  Preity Zinta also takes a nice turn as his love interest.  She’s so cute and pretty at the same time, a little Drew Barrymore-ish, but that comparison doesn’t do Preity’s dimples justice.  A campy, romantic comedy, the story follows a couple who meet at a London train station and fall in love with each other, despite both being engaged, or are they?  The silly, over-the-top script - a wax Superman statue at Madame Tussaud’s flying down and almost hitting Preity who gets saved by an ultra-suave lawyer played by Bobby Deol, as one example - is a fun romp. Also enjoyable is the intergenerational cast, always nice to see father and son, Amitabh and Abhishek, together.

The only irony was that the dancing was pretty weak considering there’s a big Southall dance competition in it and the word dance is in the title.  The choreography was simple, and Preity and Lara Dutta were stiff.  Their moves made me wish for Aishwarya and Bipasha to come in.  Aishwarya does make a voice cameo as Abhishek’s cell phone ringer voice, "Hey handsome," so says Wikipedia.  For snacks, the samosas were warm and delicious.  The Naz staff were also very polite and nice, which goes back to my previous posts that South Asians are the nicest Asians. Seriously, compared to Chinese and Koreans, South Asians are like royalty in the manners department.

Preity and Abhi have great chemistry! Both excel in playing mini con artists, who try to one up each other. The European locations, the hip and colorful costumes (Abhishek sports a one-of-a-kind jacket) and decor make this film a great escape. The soundtrack is bumping, but I would have liked to hear more traditional singing.  I give this movie 4 out of 5 samosas.  If you want to see this movie, you should hurry for it looks like it’s about out of the rotation at Naz. For more Bollywood posts, please click here.

UnHip LA’s Bollywood screenings thus far:  Dhoom 2 (5 samosas), Cheeni Kum (5s), Bunty Aur Babli (5s), Bluff Master (5s), Kuch Naa Kaho (4s), Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke (0.5s), Partner (0s), Yuva (4.5s).

Weekend Reminders

July 27, 2007

UnHip LA has been tracking a few events this summer, and here’s what’s up for this weekend, with links to my previous posts.

The Really Really Free Market Saturday morning in Pasadena.

The Independent Shakespeare Company performing Macbeth and A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Barnsdall.

Shakespeare by the Sea performing The Merchant of Venice and The Taming of the Shrew in Torrance.

Levitt with all their free music concerts in Old Town Pasadena.

and last but not least JOAN JETT in Alhambra.

BTW, all these events are FREE!

Monrovia’s Summer Art Walks

Monrovia is such a lovely small town.  Saturday, July 28, from 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm, they’ll be having an art festival.  Click here for details.

Old MacDonald had a movie

South Pasadena’s family-friendly outdoor movie series is about half over now. These lovely photos of the venue are courtesy of Jill Davis Doughtie of www.eyelevelpasadena.com.  Check her blog to see more.  The free movies are on Saturday nights at 8 pm.  Here’s the schedule and location.

So while the kids are here, perhaps the adults will be rocking out with Joan Jett in Alhambra, also this Saturday night.  Put another dime in the jukebox baby.

Really Really Free #3

July 25, 2007

The third Really Really Free Market will be this Saturday, July 28, from 9am - 1pm in Pasadena at the Bresee Nazarene Church.  Click here for details.

These markets sound like they are getting better and better!  Yay!  I’m starting my basket now of things to bring.  Here’s my post on the first one when human vultures descended upon me.  Good times.

Walk This Way

Here’s a nifty site called Walk Score that helps you find places within walking distance of your home, or any address you desire.  Just plug in your details, and then shops, restaurants, libraries, and more will pop up with their distance from you.  Your address will also get an overall Walk Score out of 100.  Mine was 75 which the site describes as "very walkable, it’s possible to get by without a car."  I do live in a very walkable, ethnically diverse neighborhood, so it’s nice to see a website concur. There are, of course, a few omissions, like my corner boba joint, but hey, no one’s perfect, including Google.

http://www.walkscore.com/index.shtml

The site has given me a few new spots to check out.  Maybe someday I’ll try to walk to Pasadena’s Playhouse 7 which is 3.33 miles from me. That’s 2x around the Rose Bowl.  So, what’s your Walk Score, baby?

(Got this from Thrillist.com)

Happy B-day FN!

July 23, 2007

Hey FN,  emoticon

emoticon Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday to youuuuu!  emoticon

Here’s to a dude-a-licious emoticon year for you!  emoticon

ATTACK OF THE KILLER CHINESE CHICKEN SALAD!

Eaten at the Cheesecake Factory, Pasadena ($12.95) on FN’s bday.  This is the first entry into my "Salad Spotting," where to get good salads category.  It’s so hard to find a good salad these days.  Please let me know when and where you find one.

Where in the world is UnHip LA?

July 18, 2007

I can only say that this was one of the coolest festivals I have ever attended in So. Cal.  Thanks C!

Pirates:

Polish Army Soldier (1569 - 1696) with Norman Schwarzkopf:

Japanese medical unit:

Native American encampment:

Answer:  Old Fort MacArthur Days in San Pedro, CA, a living history and historical reenactment festival, themed around military encampments from Ancient Rome to present day.  It was a great event with history buffs and nuts showing off their knowledge and wares.  I felt things were quite authentic.

Next year’s festival will be July 12-13 in San Pedro, near the Korean Friendship Bell.  Reenactors spend the night in their camps and eat mush.

www.ftmac.org  for more info.

(BTW, That’s not really Norman Schwarzkopf above.)

Shakespeare by the Sea and in South Pas

July 17, 2007

Take a look at Shakespeare by the Sea’s free summer performance schedule.  It’s nearly half over.  emoticon http://www.shakespearebythesea.org/calendar.html

The troupe roves all over So. Cal. and is making a pit stop in South Pasadena this Thursday, July 19, at Garfield Park, to perform The Taming of the Shrew.

7:00 pm
1000 Park Avenue
South Pas, CA 91030

On August 10 and 11, the troupe will perform The Taming of the Shrew and The Merchant of Venice in San Pedro, by the sea, the real sea.  See picture above.

Consult their website for their numerous performance venues.  For some venues, they have picnic-buying options.  I hope this troupe will be as good as Barnsdall’s performers.  Oh, it’s on!  Please click my Shakespeare category button on the left to see more posts on the Bard.

Psssst - Free Malibu Beach Safaris!

Learned about this via laobserved.com.  A group called the L.A. Urban Rangers is showing people the secret beaches of Malibu:

Tired of Zuma and Surfrider? Want to find and use the other beaches in Malibu? The twenty miles that are lined with private development? The "Malibu Public Beaches" safaris will show you how to find, park, walk, picnic, and sunbathe on a Malibu beach. Each 3 1/2-hour safari visits two or three beaches and explores natural history, jurisdiction, and the identification of public and private property. Skills-enhancing activities include a public-private boundary hike, an accessway hunt, sign watching, and a public easement potluck.

Read my post on finding Lechuza Beach using LA Urban Rangers material.  It was a haven.
And here is my post-safari report on the accessing the East Malibu beaches. Lechuza is on the West side of Malibu.

My Favorite Boba (Temple City)

July 15, 2007

is at Tenju Tea House in Temple City !

I will drive out of my way to get Boba from this place.  The Boba milk tea here actually tastes like tea and is not over-milked and over-sweetened as in other cafes. And it’s in a mature cup.  At first, I missed the heat-sealed lid, but now I like being a Boba adult. emoticon  (Though it did spill in my car, twice.)

Could it even be healthy?  I don’t know, but the other tea line-up here looks pretty good, and their website pushes the health value of their drinks.  (I once tried lavendar tea at another cafe and well, I ended up with a mouth full of actual lavendar pellets or whatnot; it was very chalky and not pleasant.) The popcorn chicken here is VERY yummy, in its own league, compared to other boba cafe, chicken snacks. Get the the three snack combo for $5.99; the squid rings and green beans are very tasty too!  Beware though, the food is pretty greasy. There’s free Wifi, but I have yet to work at this place.  It’s always been too loud, too crowded, too dark, and too orange for my tastes.

You can call ahead to have your order ready.  The chicken takes longer than you think a snack should take, but perhaps that’s why it’s sooo good!  Also, make sure to get their stamp card: buy 10 drinks and the 11th is free.

Borders Pasadena on a Sat. night - A Freak Zone

Ladies -

Beware! emoticon Reading/studying at Borders Pasadena on a Saturday night in the cafe is not a good idea.  The place teems with odd men who attempt to make eye contact and strike up conversation with bookish women.  It was so, so, so creepy! emoticon I wonder if Borders in Arcadia is any better.  I have lots of work I need to get done.

Really Really Free Market #2

July 14, 2007

I would be remiss not to mention that the second Really Really Free Market is happening in Pasadena today, Saturday, July 14th, from 8:15 am - 1pm.  Here’s their site with directions and here’s my previous post on the first one.  I hope people get some good stuff!  Hopefully it won’t be as hot as the last one.  emoticon

Some people go camping…

I, however, get my great outdoors fix at all the night-time festivals happening in L.A.  I caught Richard II tonight at Barnsdall.  It’s not the perkiest of plays, but I did enjoy the performances of loony King Richard II, his steely cousin Henry IV, and the versatile actor who played Gaunt and other roles.  Much less people tonight than at Dream last weekend, so picnicking was very comfortable.  Also no bees attacked me as I did not wear red.  I think the best parts were the warm weather (though lots of dew so don’t leave electronics on the ground) and being able to watch Shakespeare in my socks while being surrounded by my encampment of blankets, food, chairs, and hot tea. Someone brought a large fuzzy brown bean bag chair for two.  I was so jealous!

Please click on my Shakespeare category button to the left to read more about Shakespeare happenings in L.A.

Happy Wedding!

Just think, I emoticon knew you when you were both single bobas.  emoticon emoticon

Pocky, Cheb i, and the Levitt

July 13, 2007

PASADENA, Memorial Park, Thursday, July 12, 7:30 pm.

It was a big, world beat, KCRW love-fest tonight for DJ Cheb i Sabbah and guests at the Levitt Pavillion in Old Town Pasadena.  The South Asian and African dancing was so fun to watch and the beats groove-a-licious.   Cheb i Sabbah said he was surprised that Pasadenans could be such a great audience.  This was, however, after he had earlier chided them and said he would leave if they didn’t get up and dance.  That was enough to get the droves up there.

My Pocky had a great time. Incidentally this Pocky was $.75 on sale from Mitsuwa; at Famima, it’s $3.00, a shame.  There was a good-size crowd but still lots of space to stretch out and picnic.  It was a great, easy night, perfect for an afterwork respite.  Consider it the Hollywood Bowl without the hassle, cost, and bowl.  Also, at the Levitt, you can go right up to the stage.

Can you believe that Cheb i Sabbah is 60 years old?
Check out the rest of Levitt’s lineup, free concerts five nights a week, all summer long.   How do the neighbors deal?

TIP:  If you get there early enough, there’s a very small, free parking lot next to the park, near the senior center.  If not, bring plenty of change for the meters or park in one of the many lots nearby. Or better yet, take the Metro; it has a stop right next to the park.  More details here.

Thx to RD for the photos!

E.T. PHONE HOME - More FREE Outdoor Movies

July 11, 2007

Check out the cinema alfresco in the San Fernando Valley:  Shrek, E.T., Dreamgirls and more on the line up which starts July 21.  Also check out the free concerts in the park too.  What is it about the summer that turns Los Angeles into a big free, family mecca?

A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Barnsdall Park - FREE!

July 9, 2007

This was a wonderful night.  I highly recommend Free Shakespeare in Barnsdall Park. The direction was assured; the performances lyrical and entertaining; the actors….hot. This is the first-time I’ve ever seen the Bard performed by ripped, shirtless male actors.  Seriously, it was like Chippendales on iambic pentameter, but with great acting. I don’t think there was a single weak link in the cast, okay, maybe one but I won’t name any names. The play within a play of Thisbe and Pyramus was hilarious; Titania, the queen of the fairies, falling in love with a donkey was hilarious, and the list goes on. The minimal set decoration - two ladders doubling as thrones, trees, you name it - worked, as did the modern wardrobe pieces mixed in with the whimisical costumes. Hermia’s bright, green sneakers, however, were a bit distracting, but the fairy wearing a purse on top her head was really cute.  Great imagination all night long!  The Dream is an amusingly delightful play about romantic relationships.

As far as picnicking, well, the space is small.  Imagine someone’s yard and then stuffing three hundred people on it, all picnic blanket to blanket.  Personally, I don’t like picnicking in tight quarters but others did not seem to mind.  Fortunately we got there early 6:00 pm and were able to get seats on risers.  6:00 pm is also a good arrival time for getting primo picnic spots and parking.  Well actually, it really doesn’t matter where you put your blanket because other people will cram up against you anyways.

(
(The people on the left are the early birds.  More people came later.)

Do not wear the color bright red.  I did and a bee would not leave me alone, hence ruining my sushi dinner.  The theatre offers free bug spray to use but it didn’t help me.  I was quite impressed by people’s elaborate picnic spreads (wicker baskets, table settings, wine, cheese, salads, someone even brought their own coffee table), but my favorite was the Louise’s pizza box.  That’s what I’m going to do next time.  It’s simple and tasty.  Also, I have a feeling that Thursday nights might not be as crowded as Saturday night when we went.  The plays (Midsummer, Richard II, and Macbeth) run Thursday through Sunday, all summer.

The Independent Shakespeare Co. believes that great art should be enjoyed by all, so performances are free. Thanks to them, I can be a Shakespeare scholarship student all summer.  I made a donation though because this was definitely worth it.  Also, parking’s free so you could throw that into the bucket as well.

Finally, being at Barnsdall at night - a haven of art, high atop a hill, in the midst of Hollywood - is quite romantic.  Barnsdall has creative grounds to walk around in and cafe-like seating about with great views of Los Angeles.  If you go early enough, you might be able to check out some of the art galleries and the Hollyhock House, which Frank Lloyd Wright designed for arts patron Aline Barnsdall.  Barnsdall also has an indoor theatre and a large schedule of art classes. Come early, wander around, relax, read, make art…

DETAILS:

Free Shakespeare in Barnsdall Park

Free parking at the top and bottom of Barnsdall. Arrive early to avoid walking up the mound.  Handicap parking is available at the top.  Bring a jacket, blanket, or whatever you might need to keep warm because it gets chilly. They sell concessions at a reasonable price, but next time I am going to bring a thermos of tea, to have with my pizza.  (TIP:  There are restrooms in the theatre building and the arts building.  Go to the arts building to avoid a line.)   emoticon

Hit Me with Your Best Shot

July 7, 2007

Oh my goodness, the city of Alhambra will be rocking out this summer with bands from the 70s and 80s. How did little Alhambra lure out the following line-up?:

- John Kay & Steppenwolf, Chuck Negron (formerly of Three Dog Night),
and Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals (July 21);
- Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (July 28);
- Teena Marie (August 4); and
- K. C. and the Sunshine Band (August 11).
And it’s all free, with food vendors, arts and crafts booths, kids activities…

Outdoor Silent Movie at Heritage Square

I got wind of this through LA City Nerd’s blog:

Heritage Square’s Silent Movie Nights
Saturday, July 7 and 21, 2007.  Beginning each night at 7 p.m.
Experience a summer night at Heritage Square Museum while watching your favorite old movies and cartoons. On Saturday. July 7, we present a showing of the celebrated “Our Gang” troop in Pigskin Palooka, a classic film released 70 years ago this year. The screening will take place on the lawn near the Palms Depot and on hand for this special screening are members from the original and supporting cast. (Movie at July 21 screening to be determined.)

The "Our Gang" Reunion and Silent Movie Night screening admission prices are free for museum members and $10.00 for the general public. Heritage Square Museum will open at 7 p.m. for picnics with the show starting at dusk. Guests are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket to sit on, picnic, and warm clothing.

____________________

I used to drive by Heritage Square when my commute took me on the 110 North, and I always wondered about this place.  It looks so weird to be where it is.  It’s a bunch of houses from California from 1850 to 1950, and a museum.  Here is a pic from www.you-are-here.com.

The screening is another picnicking opportunity!

Summer Shakespeare - Barnsdall Art Park

My goal this summer is to hit every outdoor Shakespeare production in the So. Cal area.  I am going to start with Barnsdall Art Park; they have a really great-sounding line-up performed by the Independent Shakespeare Co.A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Richard II, and Macbeth.  Tonight (Saturday) is A Midsummer Night’s Dream at 7:30 pm.  I have never been before to this festival, so I am not sure what the parking situation will be like.  The performance is free, too (donations appreciated)!  Nothing like free Bard, to make a good, unhip summer; performances run through the beginning of September.  The photo above of the park is from you-are-here.com, which has great photography of Los Angeles landmarks, shot by a German engineer who visits L.A. often.  Check it out!  Also, if you didn’t know, the Barnsdall Art Park has a museum, art center, and the Hollyhock House (above) which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Please dress warmly, and reservations are recommended."

Really Really Hot Day

July 1, 2007

Here are images from Pasadena’s first Really Really Free Market, held on Saturday, June 30, 2007 at Bresee Nazarene Church at 1480 E. Washington Blvd, 9 am to 1 pm. I unfortunately got there really really late.  The organizer said that they moved a lot of stuff today, more than what was left when I got there.  As soon as I dragged out my stuff, people descended upon me, taking my old Levi’s and my Fight Club novel.  They were like human vultures, but it was cool.  I walked away with a bunch of books:  Synonym Finder, Webster’s dictionary, APA Style Guide, and Birds of America.  Also a bunch of beads.  Someone dropped off crates and crates of beads.  It was crazy.  I wonder if people were offering services earlier; I would have liked to write stuff for people.  Maybe next time.

Bunnies…free

Beads…free

Strange devices…free

91 degree HEAT…free

The Really Really Free Market….Priceless.

I hope these things grow and grow.  I’d love to live in a place
where people just wanted to help each other.

The next RRFM will be Saturday, July 14, 8am - 1pm, same place.  This time they said there will be an indoors rest area.
