This Holiday Season

December 26, 2006

Many Angelenos will be heading out of town this holiday season.  Not me.  I’m going to pretend I’m taking my vacation here.  I went to the Chinese Hilton Hotel today (for lunch) and got tourist brochures of local sites.  We shall see where I end up.  I’m thinking the beach…

Here’s the link for the Chinese Hilton which is in San Gabriel.

They serve a breakfast and lunch buffet which is not too pricey ($10-12/person), but it’s also not  too tasty either.  Tip:  Don’t pay the $5-10 for hotel parking.  Enter on the shopping plaza side and it’s free parking for 2 hours.  Then you’ll also have easy access to the many stores (3 levels) that are next to the Hilton.  There are several restaurants and cafes and gift shops, plus at least three financial/investment type of businesses:  HSBC, Scottrade, and I can’t remember the other names.   I know this blog would be way more helpful with pictures, but I have not been able to figure that out just yet.  Also, I don’t think anyone is reading this yet either.

Griffith Park Observatory

December 15, 2006

I went there a few weekends back.  It was extremely crowded inside like a science far run amok, but the outside balconies were fun to walk around and see L.A. from.  The cafe food is substandard for a Wolfgang Puck; I got a salad ($10) and it was watery and mushy.  My friend got a hotdog ($3.50) and gobbled that thing down in seconds.  Still sitting outside on "the edge of the world" as the cafe is called was quite pleasant. http://www.griffithobservatory.org/vcafe.html  Also nice is the walk up to the observatory.  There is a shuttle but I suggest forgoing it for this pleasant hike.

Currently you can get FREE tickets for the observatory on their website!  www.griffithobs.org

You need a ticket reservation even if you just want to walk up there.  This is a temporary policy until all the hoopla dies down.
