I’ve been spending way too much time on Twitter.  I hope you’ll follow unhipla there because I post way more over there than here now.  www.twitter.com/unhipla.  Sure once the novelty wears off for me, I’ll probably return to these pages.

In the meantime, here are some of my recent tweets of things to do in LA:

Subversive superhero art show at the Royal T this Fri 7/17. Free! Superhero attire suggested, contests/hero snacks too.

This sounds like wacky fun

July 10, 2009

On Saturday, Beverly Hills hosts a "public art party" to celebrate the work of Yayoi Kusama.  I’ve experienced a Kusama installation before at the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh.  It was cool and wacky.  This event’s free and the Paley Center for Media will be free as well that day as part of the festivities.

http://www.publicartparty.com/

Combine this day with a visit to the Renegade Craft Fair (also free) and you’ll have a great, creative Saturday.

Renegade Craft Fair - July 11-12

July 7, 2009

This sounds great!

http://www.renegadecraft.com/los-angeles?site=la

And it’s free!

Learn how to make a linoelum block print and other arts/crafts for free!  There will be bands too.  And it all takes place on the penthouse level of California Market Center with 360-degree views of downtown L.A.

 ****  UPDATE***

We went to this.  It was very cool to see all the great craft-y stuff people made.  Creativity was everywhere.  It was nice to see that there were people who weren’t technologically obsessed and still making things by hand.  Practically everyone was a hipster there in a craft-y sense and no grandma dollies or doilies were around.  Most of the vendors were quite shy and that was cute to see, though that probably doesn’t help their businesses.  One of the coolest things I saw was The Weekend Store which made vintage recycled jewelry from old typewriter keys.  Pics to come.

These bloggers have nice posts about the event:

UnHipLA is in Chicago again

July 5, 2009

~~Note - I wrote this a few weeks ago, but am too lazy to change the verbs. ~~

I’m here in Chicago again for my annual June pilgrimage.  Here are some new observations of Chicago (It might help to read my ones from last year to compare.  Also put Chicago into my search box above.):

1.  Downtown Chicago has great "walk" signs.  The most I’ve had to wait at one was 20 seconds.  I walked blocks and blocks without nary a break.

2.  Fancy galoshes are popular here.  I saw many women sporting these rain boots in many different patterns.  It was supposed to thunderstom today, but luckily it didn’t.

3.  Smoking is prevalent in the city.  People of all ages were puffing while walking and taking smoke breaks outside of buildings.  That was very weird for me to see because in L.A., I just don’t see too many smokers.  Then again, I don’t really see lots of people together either because I am not walking around with crowds of people - I am driving.  In downtown Chicago though with lots of people walking together, I frequently would have to hold my breath whenever a smoker passed by.  If I did not hold my breath long enough, I’d get a whiff of the second-hand smoke cloud.  Smoking just seemed like an anachronism, so 70s or 80s.  I really don’t experience second or first-hand smoke in L.A., just smog.

4.  Steak houses are everywhere and froyo still has not taken over the Midwest yet.  No Pinkberries in sight, but there are froyo knock-offs.

5.  People in Chicago are as nice and helpful as ever.  Chicago is a cosmopolitan city allright but it just doesn’t have any of the ‘tude NYC has.   That’s pretty cool.

6.  Paper toilet seat covers are still not often used here.  Why, Chicago, why?  It’s like the city has a boycott against them.

7.  Cloth towel hand driers still exist!

8.  Cellulite is A-okay here!  It’s hot and humid - women are wearing shorts and tanks tops with no shame.  This definitely is not L.A. where toned bodies are everywhere.  I find it hard to believe Michelle Obama came from these parts because the majority of women I’ve seen here decidedly do not have Michelle arms.  I think I’m primarily looking at Midwestern tourists though.  I like it that people are not fixated by appearance here.  It’s a relief.

Summer starts today! Hollywood Bowl without the Bowl

June 24, 2009

Tonight kicks off the Levitt Pavilion’s free outdoor concert series in Pasadena.  http://www.levittpavilionpasadena.org/summer-calendar-2009.html

And this Friday begins Free Shakespeare in Barnsdall Park. http://www.independentshakespeare.com/box-office/box-office.html

You can picnic at both of these places.  When I first started this blog, I was majorly enamored by both these events and wrote about them here and here.  The Levitt Pasadena is the Hollywood Bowl without the Bowl.  Both series are a great way to have fun on a dime.

Mark your calendar - August 21 is Bollywood Night at the Levitt!!!

UnHipLA is twittering

Yes, I’ve finally gotten on the bandwagon.  I’m unhip, what can I say?  Here’s my twitter link:

http://twitter.com/unhipla

I have a feeling I’ll be tweeting more than blogging only because I often have good things to share but don’t always feel like firing up the laptop, logging into the blog, typing in the small box, spellchecking, etc.   We shall see.  Let the games begin!

Here’s an explanation of what Twitter is.

The Midwest is nice to its children

June 19, 2009

We saw Up today at the AMC Barrington 30 in South Barrington, Il.  While there, I noticed two flyers for special screenings:

Summer Movie Camp - $1.00 movies, Wednesdays at 10 am for kids.  July 1st will be Madagascar Escape 2.  The money goes to charity. My sister tells me these movie days are a madhouse because summer camps come to them.  Still, it’s a great deal.   AMCEntertainment.com/smc   I just went to its site and see this deal is nationwide too.

Sensory-Friendly showing of Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs on Saturday, July 11th at 10 am. "With Sensory-Friendly Films, the movie auditoriums will have their lights brought up and and the sound turned down."  This screening is for autistic children and is co-sponsored by the Autism Society of America.

What is it about the Midwest?

UnHipLA is in the Midwest now.  There is something Twilight Zone weird about crossing the time zones from the West Coast to here.  I looked at myself in the mirror and I seem to have gained 10 pounds instanteously.  How can this be?  The Midwest makes people fat.  And they smoke a lot here.  I’m having a great time though!  More observations on Chicago to come…

Fair skin warning for Friday - Red Alert!

From the LATIMES:

Wear your sunscreen Friday, weather experts warn

2:35 PM | June 18, 2009

People with fair or light skin should be careful if they’re out and about Friday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

At around noon, the Los Angeles area will reach an ultraviolet index level of 11, which is classified as a “high” exposure level, said Craig Long, a research meteorologist with the weather service. An ultraviolet index is a measure of how much skin-burning ultraviolet radiation is coming down from the sun.

“If you can avoid being out in the middle part of the day, doing your activities in the morning or afternoon, you won’t be exposed to as much UV as you would in the central part of the day,” Long said.

The high UV level is due to a combination of the time of year, the weather conditions and the low pollution levels that will be in the air Friday. Since the skies will be clear, there are fewer pollution particles to scatter UV rays, Long said.

“The sun is as high above us as it’s going to get during the summer,” he said.

Though certain people are more sensitive to the sun’s rays than others, the key for everyone is limiting exposure and being prepared and cautious while out in the sun, Long said.

“It’s your dosage that really determines whether you get a sunburn or not,” he said.

The tide is high

May 25, 2009

We visited Lechuza Beach over the Memorial Day weekend, arriving right when the tide was pretty high - after sunset but still light out - so we couldn’t walk onto the beach.  Still, it was very cool.  Look how close the water comes to the stairs.  It was as if these stairs led straight to the ocean.

I loved the rhino-looking rocks.  This one reminded me of a lonely beast looking out to sea:

Previously when I visited Lechuza, I got a nice stretch of the beach.  Not this time:

We found free parking in the neighborhood right next to an Aston Martin and beach-front mansions.  The gate was locked on our way out but a neighbor freed us.

For directions on how to visit Lechuza, a free beach with free parking, visit here.  To read about my other Malibu beach exploits and how to get on David Geffen’s beach, click on my Malibu Beaches for All post.  The Los Angeles Urban Rangers taught me how to operate these beaches; sometimes, they run free safaris to the Malibu beaches.  Now that summer’s rolling around, the beach is calling you.

* Caution - Lechuza Beach and the secret beaches of Malibu do not have lifeguards, bathrooms, and civilization around them.  Visit at your own risk.  Certainly don’t go into the water at high tide and don’t go alone. *

A Change of Heart: Fresh and Easy

April 26, 2009

I’ve become a fan of the store.  I know I pooh-poohed it in other posts, but now I have become a fan of the artisan sourdough wheat bread (it toasts quite well) and the super-fast checkouts.  I have never stood in line there.  I just walk right on up to one of the atm-like check out stands and voila, I’m out.  I think it helps if you don’t have a lot of items, which is usually my case.  I tried one of the soups (as per a reader’s suggestion) and it was good too, and I finally got a bag of lettuce that did not go bad in a day.  I will say the store definitely is "easy" and the bread tasted very "fresh."

It’s chicken and ice cream week!

From J, I learned this:

Monday, April 27 - Free grilled chicken at KFC.  Grilled, not fried.  KFC’s branching out.

Tuesday, April 28 - Free chicken at El Pollo Loco till 8 pm.

Wednesday, April 29 - .31 cent scoop night at Baskin Robbins from 5 - 10 pm (firefighter fundraiser)

Yeha!  Recession dining continues…

Art festival in a special place

April 21, 2009

The Pasadena Waldorf School is hosting its second annual Festival of Art on Saturday, April 25, 2009, 10 am to 5 pm.  I’ve been curious about Waldorf schools ever since I read that its students learn how to knit and weave even before writing.  The thinking behind this is if a student knows how to make clothes, she’ll be empowered.  I could have this all wrong though.  Please enlighten if you know.  Nonetheless, the festival gives outsiders a chance to tour the school’s wooded grounds.

***** UPDATE ****

I went to this and it was great, very peaceful and relaxing.  The campus is idyllic with its shady trees and bungalows.  I was impressed by the selection of artists too; they seemed to be representing higher quality work than what I’ve seen at other art fairs (i.e. South Pasadena’s).  Also the food, though just with two vendors, was great:  vegetable fritters, healthy vegetable chow mein, potato latkes, gourmet pizzas, and more.  This was a zero-waste event, meaning all trash was either recycled or composted.  I was impressed.  I also got to visit a very cheerful, yellow classroom and see the handiwork of the students.  Yes, they do learn knitting and then progress to making clothes, dolls, and animals.  They also have a school period called "games."  The school just seemed like a really safe, protected place.  I couldn’t tell if the kids did computer projects or had computers.  A place without texting - could it be?

Spa Week is back

April 12, 2009

$50 spa treatments during Spa Week, April 13 - 19.

To find a spa near you, go to www.spaweek.com.

I suggest making an appointment with a spa that has facilities - sauna, steam, whirlpool, gym, pool - so that you can make a true, getaway day out of this.  The Pacific Waters Spa in Huntington Beach and Spa Xanadu in Arcadia are two such spas.  I’ve been to both and had a relaxing time.  Ask the spa if they’ll order food for you.  Though it’s a recession, you can still get your spa on.

Eat for Pennies

April 7, 2009

Hop Li in Arcadia is currently running a $1.38 dim sum promotion (Monday through Friday) celebrating its 4th anniversary. Hop Li is one of my favorite dim sum places because there’s usually no line.  I hate waiting in line for dim sum.  Sure, you might think the no line is a bad sign but it’s not.  Hop Li is in Arcadia, far enough away from the Monterery Park, San Gabriel, and Alhambra dim sum scene that it doesn’t attract big numbers.  Plus the restaurant is large and nice looking.

Twohey’s in Alhambra has a month-long $.66 special celebrating their 66 years in business.

April 9 - 15 = .66 floats

April 18 - 22 = .66 mini-sundaes

April 23 - 30 = .66 Stink-O-Sliders  (I believe these are little burgers.)

Eat for pennies!  Hooray for anniversaries!

Indian sandwiches or naanwiches!  I’ll have to stop by this place next time I’m in the Miracle Mile.  I read about this on EatingLA.com.  I tried to do a direct link to her post about the Cowboys & Turbans restaurant but I couldn’t figure out how to do it.  Cowboys and Turbans serves Indian street food.

Limp Lettuce Found Again at Fresh & Easy

March 29, 2009

I got the Greek salad from Fresh and Easy and it was very disappointing - just some hacked up leaves thrown haphazardly in a container. (Trader Joe’s has much better salad presentation.) The leaves did not remain fresh for longer than a day despite the freshness date on the package.  Is this because Fresh and Easy does not use preservatives, artificial flavorings and colorings?  Has anyone else received limp, brown lettuce from this place?  This is the second time I’ve brought home salad from them and saw it turn brown within a day.

Anyhow and regardless of my disappointment with F&E, I still find myself drawn to the place and buying chocolate chip granola bars from them.

BBQ for $5 at Whole Foods

March 18, 2009

Can a cheap meal be had at Whole Foods?  As I get to know its second floor eating area better, I think I can say….Yes.  The breakfasts, tacos, and Middle Eastern food all seemed reasonably priced.  Then I saw this on WF’s (Arroyo Parkway location) calendar:

Saturday March 21st and Sunday 22nd

Whole Lotta BBQ!

12pm-3pm $5 per plate

Join us at the Demo Station both days to get your loaded down plate of BBQ, chips/cookies, salad, and drink for only $5! And all the proceeds go to the Whole Planet Foundation. Help end poverty and end your hunger all at the same time!

____

Get your plate "loaded" with BBQ for only $5?  This I have to see and maybe I will see it twice.

Yesterday, I had WF’s Korean spicy chicken bowl and I was pleased with it; the spinach and brown rice with it were great.  It’s not that cheap though at a little over $8, but it was good and the health factor makes me like it more than other Korean fare.  It’s what I would call Healthy Korean Cuisine.

Whole Foods affordable in a recession?  It just may be possible. Plus they have free Wifi.

The San Gabriel High School Parent Teacher Student Association wants your electronic waste - old TVs, computers, toner cartridges, mother boards, vcrs…etc.  Check out their flyer on the SGHS website for more details.  Microwaves will be accepted for a $5 fee.  This is a great way to get rid of junk in your home and benefit a public school.  I’m planning to discard an old heater that doesn’t work and some laser cartridges.

San Gabriel PTSA will be hosting a FREE eWaste Collection Event at the school’s south parking lot on Saturday, March 7 and Sunday, March 8, 2009 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm each day.

Air Raids and Bonsai-a-thons

February 28, 2009

I’ve been busier than usual but I got wind of a few interesting sounding events:

a re-enacted mysterious air raid in Long Beach today

a bonsai-a-thon at Huntington Gardens today

and a modern Samurai exhibit to open at the Pacific Asia Museum.

Hope you can google can find more….Sorry…short on time….and have to be up at 4 am!

Is Bollywood coming to Hollywood?

February 24, 2009

This CNN article says it’s not.  Well, we’ll see.  Last night’s Academy Awards was pleasantly India-dominated.  I enjoyed seeing the Indian song and dance numbers from Slumdog Millionaire, and hearing the speeches of the Indian winners which seemed to be less self-centered than the speeches of others. Jai Ho!  Indian Composer A.R. Rahman has made his country very proud after having won two Oscars in one night for best score and song. I wonder if the Academy is more globally focused now due to Obama’s presidency.

Shopping in Little India

Fresh & Easy Visit #3

February 16, 2009

So I’ve now been to Fresh & Easy in Alhambra three times and can say this - I don’t like the shopping experience there.  The aisles are smaller than most grocery stores, so it’s hard not to run into someone.  I felt cramped and cornered there.  Also the ready-made food section looked very uninspired.  I could not bring myself to buy anything from there.  I do, however, like the tea section; it seemed to have more unique teas than most stores and A LOT cheaper at $2.15/box.  Whole Foods did not have chocolate tea, but Fresh & Easy did. (I just saw that Trader Joe’s sells tea cheaper than Fresh and Easy.)  I did get some Fresh & Easy chocolate granola bars that were hearty and tasty. I did not look forward to checking myself out though.  As I was bagging my groceries, another family started scanning their purchases, so their stuff collided with mine.  Grrrr!  After shopping at F & E, I have decided I like the little luxury of having a clerk and bag person.  F & E makes Ralphs seem like a spa.  I did see a lot of families shopping at F & E, so I’m guessing there are good deals on meat and produce.  I’m really more of a ready-made, frozen, and snack shopper, so perhaps my views of F & E are not the norm.  Also, I think the rainy weather has made me more cross than usual.  Grrrr!

Check for expired food

Sadly I must report that some cookies I bought from Whole Foods on Arroyo Parkway were two to three months expired.  I hadn’t realized this until I took them home and bit into one of the stale, dry lumps  A friend told me that he has found expired goods at Trader Joe’s as well.  I called Whole Foods and informed them of the bad cookies.  Then I went to the Whole Foods on Foothill to buy fresher cookies AND this WF had expired boxes on the shelf as well!  For shame, Whole Foods, for shame.  And that goes to you too Trader Joe’s.  Are stores trying to trick us poor recession shoppers into buying old food?  I really don’t think it’s that hard for workers to check for expiration dates and clear out the old  It just never occurred to me that cookies would have expiration dates, but the cookies I bought were organic, so I guess they’re not the type of cookies to bring into a bomb shelter.

The clerk who took my expired cookies was indifferent to the whole transaction, as if this happened regularly  I just wasted my time and gas to return expired food (in the rain!); the least WF could do is apologize.  The lesson to be learned here - check expiration dates on food products, especially in a recession.  I think this would be a good topic for a news article.  I unfortunately do not have the time to investigate.  This has been a public service announcement brought to you by UnHip LA.

White water rafting….

….in Pasadena!  Today I was driving uphill Lake Avenue, just north of Huntington Boulevard, and I was amazed by all the water flowing down the street.  It was like a waterfall or small rapids.  The driveways of the houses also had water gushing down from them, adding to the street torrent. I felt like me and my car were doing a little white water rafting.  I hope none of the houses experience mudslides.

Burrito Kingdom, Alhambra

I’ve been meaning to blog about Burrito Kingdom in Alhambra, CA, the place where I go for my carnitas taco fix.  I’ve been to this place many, many times, and I am in love with their carnitas taco, which is juicy and spicy (with salsa) and always tasty.  I have not tried many other things on this menu mainly because I have been so pleased with the carnitas taco.  Why stray from a good thing?  This is the best carnitas taco I’ve had in L.A.!  At $1.50 each, the price is recession right with each taco having much more meat than most taco truck fare.  The freshly chopped onion is great too.
